Detroit Red Wings struggling with injuries

The Detroit Red Wings are going to have to find a way to cope with several injuries to players if they are to make it further than round 1 of the playoffs. The Wings now have eight players on their ever-growing injury list, including star players: Pavel Datsyuk (knee), Nicklas Lidstrom (ankle), Jonathan Ericsson (wrist), Todd Bertuzzi (groin) and Jimmy Howard (lower body injury).

Another star that has a slight injury is Henrik Zetterberg (ankle), who is not playing to his full capacity as a result. Some good news is that Pavel Datsyuk skated lightly at training for the second day in a row. The media attendance commented that Datsyuk looked good as he casually glided on the ice.

However, there has been no talk about Nicklas Lidstrom's injury over the weekend and today.

Jimmy Howard seems to have sustained no major injury as no damage has been caused to the injured area, suspected to be a groin tweak. Howard is hopeful to pad up against Los Angeles on Friday night or Saturday in Nashville. He is officially listed as day-to-day.

This brings up a lot of concerns about the Detroit Red Wings. Is their era of dominance coming to an end. Is their roster simply too old to cope? With many players in their 30's and late 20's the future for Detroit may not be that pretty. Once all their star players, who all happen to be veterans retire this team will be left with a lot of hard work and rebuilding. Some of these injured players must surely be wondering wether their time in the NHL is up. The best possible thing for Detroit right now is for the veterans to start or continue mentoring the younger players.
