The International Federation of Association Football, or in French: Fédération Internationale de Football Association(FIFA) is responsible for the running of football’s major international tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup.
FIFA’s headquarters are located in Zurich, Switzerland and its current president is Sepp Blatter.
FIFA was formed because there was a need for one body to manage the game. At the beginning of the 20th century it was needed most as there was an increase of international games.
FIFA was founded in Paris on 21 May 1904, its French name and abbreviation remains the same even outside of French-speaking countries.
FIFA is now one of the most recognisable sporting bodies in the world. FIFA has played a role in 19 World Cups and the next one is to be held in Brazil in 2014.
