After many delays, NASA’s space shuttle Endeavour launched from Cape Canaveral for its final journey.
The two-week journey to the International Space Station is the last before the shuttle enters retirement, and the second last for the program.
Astronaut Mark Kelly, the husband of wounded politician Gabrielle Giffords, is commander of the shuttle. Ms Giffords, who was shot in the head outside a Tucson supermarket during a January 8 meeting with constituents, was in Florida to witness the launch.
An electrical problem cancelled the first launch set for April 29, which would have been attended by President Barack Obama, among other officials.
Instead, Endeavour blasted off on a clear, humid morning today as Ms Giffords watched in-person with other family members of the four-person crew.
NASA's space shuttle Atlantis will fly the final mission for the shuttle program in July.
