On this day: 2005 - Australian Schapelle Corby is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in Kerobokan Prison for drug smuggling

D'oh! Should've thought about this before
you tried to smuggle drugs into another country.

On the 8th of October 2004, Schapelle Corby was travelling with three friends from Brisbane to Bali with a stop in Sydney. Corby had previously been to Bali to visit her sister, Mercedes. This was to be her first visit to Bali in four years.

Corby and her friends arrived in Denpasar at 2:30 local time. Soon after her arrival, Corby was apprehended by Indonesian customs officers. She was found with 4.2 kg of cannabis in her boogie board bag.

At Brisbane airport, the four bags belonging to Corby and her friends were not weighed individually but weighed 65 kg in total. The Bali police and customs did not record the weight of the bags.

Corby stated that she had no knowledge of the drugs.

On May 27 2005 Corby was convicted and sentenced for the drug smuggling. She is currently six years into her 20 year conviction at Kerobokan Prison in Bali.
