On this day: 1937 - The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, is officially opened by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington, D.C.

File:GoldenGateBridge-001.jpgOn May 27 1937 the Golden Gate Bridge was opened to pedestrians and the opening celebrations began. A day later President Roosevelt wrote a telegraph from Washington D.C. signaling the official start of vehicle traffic over the Bridge at noon, letting the world know that the Golden Gate Bridge had been officially opened to all traffic.

The Golden Gate Bridge had the most distance from one side to the other in the world when it was completed in 1937, and has become one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and of the United States.
