On this day: 1994 - Four men convicted of bombing the World Trade Center in New York in 1993 are each sentenced to 240 years in prison

File:WTC 1993 ATF Commons.jpgThe 1993 World Trade Center bombing occurred on February 26, 1993. The event happened when a bomb inside a truck was detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.

The explosive was supposed to knock the North Tower into the South Tower, destroying both towers and killing thousands of people. 

The plan failed but the attack still killed seven people and left thousands injured.

The attack was organised by a group of conspirators including Ramzi Yousef, Mahmud Abouhalima, Mohammad Salameh, Nidal A. Ayyad,Abdul Rahman Yasin and Ahmad Ajaj.

They received money from Khaled Shaikh Mohammed, Yousef's uncle, in order to carry out the attack. In March 1994, four men were convicted of carrying out the bombing: Abouhalima, Ajaj, Ayyad and Salameh.

In November 1997, two more were convicted: Yousef, the mastermind behind the bombings, and Eyad Ismoil, who drove the truck carrying the bomb.
